La Residence

Franschhoek, Sør-Afrika

On a hillside overlooking the small village of Franschhoek you find this pearl of a luxury hotel with majestic views of the Drakenberg Mountains. La Residence is a place for relaxation, excellent food and wine. It's also a very good location for excursions to they vineyards in the Franschhoek valley and Stellenbosch. Exclusive and luxurious in every way, the property even has black swans happily circling a pond. Without doubt, one of the most beautiful hotels we have encountered.

La Residence has only 11 suites. There are two categories - superior and luxury, but that said - there are no poor rooms at this hotel. All the rooms have their own distinct style but common for all are Persian rugs, antique furniture and beautiful and fantastic beds. The grand bathrooms of these suites are amazing - bigger than most hotel rooms and well equipped with freestanding bathtubs. We stayed at room number 8, Chambre Bleu, in the hotel's west wing, with beautiful mountain views and spectacular sunsets.

Food & Wine

As the name suggests, Franschhoek is a French corner in South Africa and the legacy of the area's origins is very visible. Good restaurants and and grand vineyards are abundant - and La Residence itself is a mecca for gourmets. The breakfast is combination of a la carte selections and a fantastic buffet with local cheese and meat cuts. Fresh fruit and homemade granola are also available. The hotel serves a three-course lunch and a five-course dinner daily with matching wines in the dining hall. Ask for a table next to the huge fireplace and enjoy local delicacies and great wines from neighboring Chateaus. La Residence offers full board but there are plenty of good restaurants in the village, so if you’re staying more than a few nights don't go full board all the way. You should at least try world famous Reuben's one night when you are there.

Believe us when we tell you that there will be a lot of eating and drinking when your in Franschhoek, so it might be a good idea to get some exercise in between your gourmet feasts. The hotel doesn’t have their own gym, but a deal with a club in the village will keep you trim and taut. A free car service will take you there when you want. A run along the wine ranks is not bad either before you indulge in your next bottle of Chenin Blanc under the sun

The Hotel Spa had not opened when we visited but this hotel doesn't do anything in half measures so we are pretty sure it will be a good one.

In a hotel in this price range with only 11 rooms you automatically expect good service with a personal touch. Fortunately, Le Residence delivers. Together with the hotel's fantastic chefs, you will quite a lot of flexibility around what you want to eat and drink. We found the staff a great help in planning excursions around the valley. Car service to the village, minibar and dry cleaning are among the services that are complimentary.
